The training of the Super Eagles of Nigeria commennced today as
preparations intensify for the AFCON 2019 Qualifiers tie against South
Africa in Johannesburg on Saturday.
During the training, five players who were impressive at the mainbowl
of the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.
Alex Iwobi – Clearly the most creative player in the Super
Eagles team and he showed it with the timing and weight of his passes
all through the session. Looks very much same player who has been
transformed at Arsenal under Unai Emery.
Leon Balogun – Apparently pushed by the clamour for
coach Gernot Rohr to drop him due to his lack of game time at Brighton
and Hove Albion, the 30 year old looked solid all through during the
drills and his abilities to read and intercept play before switching
play from defence to attack means he will likely keep his place.
Victor Osimhen
– Quick, daring and skillful. Osimhen was a delight to watch. His
abilities to wriggle out of tight spaces drew applause from the crowd.
He appears to have also added a bit of physicality to his game as he
used his body to good effect during duels.
Samuel Chukwueze – The Villarreal rave of the moment
didn’t disappoint. He went past his markers with ease and displayed a
near perfect shooting ability. Not the quickest without the ball but
when on the ball, the speed at which he makes decision is scary.
Henry Onyekuru – Stole the session with smart dribbles
and clever link up play. Defended nicely as well and overall looked
very lively for the entire duration of the session. A sign of how eager
he is to push for a spot in the team.
